The Strid

This is a drawing of the River Wharfe as it narrows from 27 metres wide to just 2 metres at these dramatic waterfalls. This natural wonder lies at the heart of Strid Woods in the magnificent Bolton Abbey estate in North Yorkshire. What struck me as I worked on this piece is just how vivid the green moss is that covers the rocks on each bank. The turmoil that lies in the large cavern beneath the waterfall is hidden beneath the surface – the tranquility of the scene masking its hidden dangers!

The original pencil sketch was made by the river and completed back in my studio at home – adding line work and colour.
